Conducted by Aya Abughazaleh
The session was held at an art studio, an intimate space that allowed participants to explore ways of connecting with themselves through the medium of clay. We began the session with brief introductions and goals/expectations of the session. Aya then explained the practice of art therapy, and different ways that it allows individuals to explore themselves and use their bodies and hands to release unarticulated emotions.
The exercise was challenging, yet participants expressed surprise that their final products turned out much better than they anticipated. Participants noticed their judgments about themselves and their work, but Aya’s reminders to focus on the process and not the final product provided reassurance and comfort. At the end, participants felt very relaxed, and they reported positive emotions arising during and after the process.
The art therapy workshop created space for participants to let go of different stresses and challenges. Participants reported slowly letting go of the clutter in their minds as the workshop proceeded. It was an enjoyable event that opened space for participants to explore different thoughts and feelings that came up in a safe, intimate setting.
